Last Updated on Monday, 16 August 2010 02:01 Written by Sam Wednesday, 25 August 2010 12:05
Many states are becoming tough on drugs, due to the increasing number of individuals who are abusing these substances. Some states, such as New York, feel that the best policies relate to the prevention of drugs, as well as their trafficking.
The prevention of drugs is accomplished in various ways as follows:
• Community programs to involve individuals
There are many community programs in New York designed to keep individuals off the streets, so that they will not engage in illicit activities, such as drug and alcohol abuse. These activities range from line dancing to basketball. Teams and leagues are formed to basically direct the attention of teens and young adults to activities that will consume their time in a legal manner. This way they will not be as prone to travel “down the wrong path”.
• Rehab facilities to prevent past users from relapsing
For those individuals who have experienced and experimented with substance abuse, rehabilitation is necessary. New York has many treatment centers that are committed on assisting those individuals in their struggle of combating drugs or alcohol. These licensed centers, along with trained and certified medical professionals, can be the answer for addicted individuals. However, the individuals must also be dedicated to the cause of overcoming their addiction.
• Avoidance of punishment
There are those persons who are aware of the punishments that result from the abuse of drugs or alcohol. For example, driving while under the influence of alcohol can result in hurting not only the individual drinking, but innocent by – standers. The outcome can be fatal or very serious. Although alcohol is not illegal, its abuse is and must be curtailed. On the other hand, taking drugs is illegal and must be entirely eliminated. New York is focused on doing this!
No matter which category a substance abuser falls, New York government officials feel that they are getting closer to solving their alcohol and drug related problems., Although they still have a long way to go, they are “on top” of the situation. With prevention programs, stiffer penalties, as well as treatment programs available, New York predicts that its abuse issues well be greatly lessened in the next few years.

Facts about the Drug and Alcohol Laws in the State of New York
Last Updated on Monday, 16 August 2010 01:49 Written by Sam Thursday, 19 August 2010 12:05
Alcohol and drug laws are toughening in the state of New York. However, there are different punishments for the associated crimes as follows:
• Alcohol crimes and related punishments
Those punishments relate with alcohols are becoming more rigid in New York. For example, for those individuals, under the age of 21, driving under the influence will be suspended for 1 year. For those individuals under the age of 21 their licenses will be revoked for 1 year or longer. Although these punishments may not seem severs, they are more rigid than they have been in the past, and there are hopes that they will become even more stringent in the months or years to come. If an individual, who has been convicted of driving under the influence, enrolls in a DDP program (Drinking Driver Program). The license will be kept in a conditional status for the length of the revocation period. Another good practice by the state of New York pertains to the refusal of a BAC test. This negative action, for individuals 21 years of age and over, will result in the suspension of a license, thus being revoked for 1 year (18 months for commercial licenses). The civil fine for this action is $500 for 1st timers and $750 for 2nd timers. For those individuals who are under 21 years of age refusing a BAC test, the punishment will incur a $125 fine coupled with a year of license suspension. Although refusal to engage in a BAC test has repercussions, it in no way shape or form is considered to be an alcohol conviction.
• Drug Crimes and punishments
In New York the drug punishment is administered according to the type of drug charge, the amount of drugs involved, and whether or not the individuals has been convicted prior to the crime. New York is attempting to rehabilitate, rather than subject a drug addict to a negative environment behind bars. Of course, the drug pushers and dealers are the ones that this state really desires to “put behind bars”. Yes, New York is serious about reducing drug traffic, and feel that the only way in which to accomplish this is by constructive rehabilitation.
New York is well on its way to cleaning up its alcohol and drug problems, and is doing so in a positive and constructive manner.

A Dancer’s Nightmare
Last Updated on Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:07 Written by Sam Thursday, 12 August 2010 12:04
Mia had always dreamed of being a professional dancer, and now her chance had finally come! It was June 15, 2010 and she had just graduated from a small high school in the hills of WV. Her senior dance recital was over, and her involvement in this show was phenomenal. Everyone, including her dance teacher, urged her to pursue her dreams and “soar to the top” of the dance profession. Although Mia was sheltered from living in such a small rural town, she convinced her parents to give their blessings pertaining to her decision involving that of moving to New York to continue studying dance, while auditioning for professional parts.
So here it was, June 15, 2010, and Mia boarded the plane for her big adventure to New York City. As she waved to her family and friends, she experienced feelings of both fear and excitement. The aircraft landed at JFK airport and Mia picked up her luggage and hailed a taxi. It was so exciting, this big magnificent city. Mia checked into the Carlton and went to her room and unpacked. She had to get to bed early so that she could begin her dance classes at the “Broadway Dance Center” at 9 AM in the morning. After waking up and having a quick late breakfast, Mia went to the dance center.
This was her dream- dancers warming up, instructors preparing for classes, all of the hustle and bustle that so made this world one of excitement and glamour. The 1st week Mia was exhausted. She worked at her dance technique, only to find that she needed more training than she had thought. After finding an apartment, she felt that she would have more time and space to practice, however she was just too tired to do anything after a day of classes at the center.
Mia had a couple of friends from the center who never got tired; they seemed to go and go. One night they came to visit her after classes and they told her their secret: that she could get a lot more energy if she took heroin each day. It would be just enough to boost her energy level. Looking at them, she decided that this might not be such a bad idea, and she succumbed. That was Mia’s downfall; she quickly ran out of money so she decided to sell some of this drug in order to get enough for her addiction. Bad led to worse and Mia found she did not even care much about dance anymore. Her only concern was how to get enough money for her drug.
Mia, being a smart girl, decided that she wanted to again feel normal and sought help at one of the best New York Drug Rehab Centers that Manhattan had to offer. She entered a program and for $13, 25 per day were prescribed Methadone a drug used to wean an addict away from heroin. The process is slow, but Mia feels back to normal and is dancing again. In fact she has been contracted to perform in the Radio City 2010 Christmas Spectacular. Although it is her sheer determination with the help and skill of the rehab center that Mia is on the right track, many agree that Mia’s “passion for dance” is her main incentive for “doing the right thing” and breaking the ties with heroin!

Prescription Medications – Are They a Problem in New York?
Last Updated on Monday, 2 August 2010 01:21 Written by Sam Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:09
Prescription meds seem to be a problem everywhere in the United States, especially in the metropolitan areas, such as New York City. Many physicians freely write scripts for pain- killers, which permits some patients to sell their unused pills for money. The pill market is so lucrative that some of these individuals decide to indulge in this illegal activity on a regular basis. The larger the city and/ or area the more that this situation is prevalent , due to the amount of buyers for these drugs, as well as the large number of physicians who prescribe these meds. The drugs that seem to be popular, especially in the New York, area include many of the following:
• Oxycontin
• Xanax
• Elavil
• Percocet
• Klonopin
• Catapres
The trend of New Yorkers, who practice drug abuse, is to mix and blend prescription drugs, which gives them an immediate high and is very dangerous; much of the time even deadly. The reasons that people abuse drugs can be in hopes of having fun, losing weight, studying more, peer pressure, as well as fitting in with friends or other family members. It is not uncommon for a drug abuser to steal ADDH medicine from a family member to get an immediate rush and/ or high. Those younger abusers between 12 and 20 years of age may even resort to consuming large amounts of cough syrup that contain “dextromethorphan”. This also can be a deadly situation, depending upon the amount taken, in conjunction with the size of the individual taking the medicine. Codeine also is very often used by drug abusers in New York; however it is most popular in Florida.
Over the counter ( OTC) drugs combined with prescription meds are a trend among teens and young adults who are part of the recreational and/or party scene in the New York area. This type of drug use with both OTC and prescription meds is better known as “pharming”. Although New York is trying to reduce its drug problem, it still has a long way to go!
