Why Drugs are Prevalent in New York
Last Updated on Monday, 27 September 2010 04:33 Written by Sam Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:05
Drugs seem to be popular in New York, although many provisions are being taken to reduce their existence. One reason that there is evidence of drug abuse in New York is due to the fact that there are many metropolitan areas within the state where drugs can easily be obtained. The easy ways in which these illegal drugs are purchased makes a difference as to how much of a drug problem exists. Many people wonder why the population of an area is the variant, as to the prevalence related to illicit drug activity.
The answer is simple,”accessibility” which is the result of a crowded city. When it comes to positive elements accessibility is a good thing, however when it pertains to negative factors, it can help to destroy the productive lifestyle of the individuals within an area. This has happened in New York; however with preventive education and rehab centers this drug dependency and/ or illicit activity within the borders of New York are decreasing.
Government agencies are focused on curtailing all drug activity, whether it is related to prescription or street drugs. It really does not matter which type is used, since the outcome is pretty much the same – “addiction”! The disturbing fact is that each year it seems that drug abusers and/ or users become younger. Now, New York is looking at grade school age children who are getting into the drug scene. Drug education programs have been implemented into school curriculums, beginning in grade schools to help educate and teach these youngsters the negative ways in which drugs will harm one’s body. These programs are helping to prevent drug use in young children; however there is still a long way to go. On the other end of the spectrum are those individuals who were not taught at a young age that drugs were harmful. They experimented and became “hooked on drugs”. For these people, New York has opened drug treatment centers to help cure these addicts.
With all of the above measures in full swing, New York feels that it is moving in the right direction when it comes to reducing and/ or eliminating its drug abuse.

New York’s Teen Addiction
Last Updated on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 12:38 Written by Sam Wednesday, 22 September 2010 12:05
The drug abuse problems in New York do not begin with the teens, but the parents. Parents need more education in regard to drugs, and this is just what New York is attempting to do: educate parents. However, state agencies are also implementing drug educational programs in their school system to begin teaching grade school age youngsters about the dangers of drugs. There are 2 types of substances that seem to pose a problem with regard to New York’s teen drug problems:
1) Prescriptions drugs
Prescription drugs become a problem when they are taken in ways other than prescribed. Addictions can arise quickly and not realized until it has already occurred. Many teens find these drugs in their medicine cabinets at home. They very often take these meds that are prescribed by a family member. Sad, but true, many addictions begin right at home, under the nose of kids’ parents.
2) Street(illicit) drugs
Many teens try drugs “on the streets”, because they are curious or pressured by their peers; or both. These substances are very dangerous for teens, due to the fact that these teens do not realize the type of drug or strength that they are purchasing and/ or consuming. There is a high % of overdosing, due to this.
No matter what the source of a teen’s addiction, much can be contributed to the lack of knowledge that each individual has incurred. With more focus on education, the trend of drug addiction is beginning to lighten up. However another step toward the prevention of drugs lies within the borders of the law. When drug users are busted for “possession”, this sends out a warning and/ or message to all teens that if they pursue illicit drugs the penalties and / or repercussions can be stiff; harsh enough to put a detriment upon their lives and future plans. This, in itself, can be enough to stop some teens; however, many feel that they will not get caught, and decide to “take a chance”. Since state agencies focus on the prevention of drugs, they also realize that there must be some concentration on the treatment and/ or cure for those teens already addicted. Treatment centers, rehab facilities, support groups, educational school drug programs, as well as relapse activity curriculums are on the rise in New York and are on their way to reducing the drug addiction problems with regard to the teenage population.

Drug users experience “ups and downs” when it comes to their behavior. The same is true with respect to their acts of aggression. When they are “high” they are more aggressive and so are their actions. This can lead to violence.
- Thefts/ robberies/ burglaries
As one’s drug habits increase, so does the need for money. It gets to the point that these individuals must steal, rob, or burglarize in order to obtain the needed monies for drugs.

This seems to be more and more common among drug users. If an addict’s property is “set on fire” the insurance money can be attained for drugs.
- DUI
“Driving under the Influence” is a common offense pertaining to drug users.
- Extremely high life style
Those persons who lead an extravagant lifestyle may do so as a false sense of wealth, resulting from the use of drugs. This lifestyle is usually “short – lived” and then the bills relating from these actions cannot be paid.
- Possession of drugs
This is an activity that is shared among drug users.
- Sale of drugs
Individuals who are highly addicted sometimes get into the activity related to the “sale of drugs” to support their drug habit. Some make extra money; however the typical drug user only makes enough to take care of his/her drug habit. Since the activities associated with illicit drugs are many and diverse, it has become a difficult process to completely eliminate them, but New York is well on its way in reducing these activities.

Last Updated on Monday, 6 September 2010 02:15 Written by Sam Wednesday, 8 September 2010 12:05
Alcohol abuse seems to be widespread in New York. This state has many large metropolitan areas where the selling and/ or distribution of alcohol are prevalent. Let’s face it; the selling of alcohol is a profitable business, both by the bottle and by the drink. Super markets, drugstores, and liquor stores all have a sizeable mark – up on bottles of beer, wine, and liquor. Many individuals who entertain or just drink at home prefer to buy their alcohol by the bottle, since this is less expensive than buying their alcohol by the drink. They are free to mix their drinks or drink them straight. Some people feel that if they do this, they will drink too much, so they prefer to go to a club or restaurant and purchase their alcohol by the drink. Here, they can socialize and enjoy their favorite alcoholic beverage in good company.
Whichever the scenario, one can become an alcoholic either way. The determining factors are related to the frequency in which you drink, coupled by the quantity that you drink. Of course, the strength of the alcohol is also a contributing factor. Since New York has many large cities, bars are abundant, as are restaurants that sell fancy and mouth watering drinks. These drinks act as incentives to individuals to purchase them. There are so many temptations that the weak willed individuals sometimes fall prey to these vices and become addicted to both the atmosphere, as well as the taste that later acts as a devastating crutch for them. Because of these factors, New York has more alcoholics than smaller states, mainly because there are not only more people, but there are more places to buy this alcohol.
New York is attempting to prevent the abuse of alcohol and to cure those already addicted individuals. The methods for prevention are as follows:
- Educating the residents of the state of New York about the regulations pertaining to the ages related to the drinking and buying and / or selling of alcoholic beverages
- Implementing the punishments reserved by New York pertaining to DUI’s and other crimes related to the abuse of alcohol

- Making certain that alcohol rehab centers are operated by certified and trained medical professionals who are dedicated to helping individuals overcoming their addiction to this hazardous substance
With all of these methods designed to assist individuals in living lives without alcohol, New York is confident that its state is on its way to reducing the problem of alcohol addiction and becoming safer!
