Those conditions that include a substance and mental problem are better known as dual diagnostic issues. Since these problems very often go hand in hand with each other these facilities are very successful in incorporating both types of treatment. Columbia University in New York City is the home for the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. The Reasons That Drugs are a Problem in New York
Last Updated on Monday, 18 October 2010 01:33 Written by Sam Wednesday, 20 October 2010 12:05
Drugs are a problem in the state of New York. There are various reasons for this illicit activity, one being its population with the numerous metropolitan areas that are located within this state. The large masses of people make it easy for individuals to trade, solicit, and sell drugs, thus being a profitable activity. Another reason that New York has a strong illicit drug community has to do with its proximity to waterways, such as the Great Lakes, and the international boundary of the Canadian/American border. With not only the waterways, air, rail, and road travel are all very accessible to New York. One reason that prescription drugs are so prevalent within the state of New York deals with the amount of scripts that physicians write.
With so many individuals receiving Oxycontin, as well as other meds, their existence is on a very large scale. Some people sell their extra pills to either support their addiction problem, or to have a lucrative income. With all of these advantages for drug dealers and addicts, New York is the perfect location to engage in any type of illicit and/ or illegal drug activity. However, the New York law officials are sending messages to all New Yorkers that with illegal drug activity comes legal consequences. They are hoping that this will be an incentive to discourage individuals from participating in these negative drug activities. Many people are becoming aware of the tightening of laws in New York with respect to street drugs. These legal restrictions are also reducing “drug gangs” that have caused a lot of crime in the past in New York. Government agencies and law enforcement officials are doing so well on their “fight against drugs” that New York has been named as one of the ”top 10” safest cities in the United States for 2010.
New York is making progress on reducing its drug problems; however it still has quite a way to go! This state has implemented “awareness” programs, as well as treatment plans pertaining to illicit drugs. This awareness plan is presented through informative measures to all individuals, beginning from grade school ages thru adulthood, while the treatment programs are administered to already addicted individuals. With all of these agendas underway, New York is well on its way to “licking the battle” against drugs!

New York has many drug rehab centers, due to the high percentage of addicted individuals. These treatment centers are licensed to treat all types of problems that are related to drug addictions. They are equipped to help individuals receive up to date treatment, maximized by trained professionals who display compassion to their patients. Without deep commitment from a facility’s staff, a positive situation is not possible. The kind of end result depends upon the individual and the severity of his/her addiction. In – patient, out-patient, short term, or long term programs are all options that are offered by New York Drug Treatment Centers.
The individual seeking the help must be devoted and committed about his/her recovery and take responsibility to become accountable for his/ her actions. The medical and psychiatric staff cannot achieve this task without the help of each patient. Only through dedication both on the patient’s and staff’s behalf, can successful results be achieved. When an individual is accepted by a treatment center the following steps are encountered:

New York’s Revolving Door: Drug Abuse
Last Updated on Monday, 4 October 2010 12:37 Written by Sam Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:05
New York has implemented many programs to both prevent drug abuse, as well as treat it after addiction has taken hold of users. However, the main concern is that there seems to be a revolving door pertaining to rehabilitated drug abusers. New York, like other states in America, is busy with programs to help addicted individuals completely recover. These agendas seem to be working and the numbers decreasing, until a closer look is taken, and names are put with the figures. Here, it is plain to see that many of the same names that are documented relating to being completely cured are reappearing after a couple of years. New York is looking at its programs and the links that are weak, which are causing a reoccurrence of drug abuse. The 3 areas of concentration under microscope are as follows:
The two programs that seem to be weak are the prevention and after treatment programs. Since the individuals are actually going through the treatment step down programs and succeeding in getting off of these substances, this “revolving door” is not the fault of these centers. However, it is the result of weak prevention and maintenance programs.
New York agencies feel that there is a need for more community centers and sports activities. Programs, such as these, will encourage kids, teens, and young adults to stay off the streets and engage in good clean wholesome entertainment and activities at these state and county supported centers. This is a step in the right direction, however one that will not happen overnight. This plan is hoped to help prevent many individuals to not begin drug related activities, and give those “cured” addicts a “drug free” environment in which to go. There is nothing better than participating in sports and fitness programs to help individuals stay motivated in living a healthy lifestyle. Support groups are also urged to encourage their members to continue to attend regular meetings, as a reminder to not”slip back”.
Unfortunately, these programs are not enough to completely solve the problems pertaining to New York’s “revolving door”, but they are a start. New York courts are trying to “send a message” to drug users that tough penalties and repercussions will be enforced, and that with prior convictions there will be no leniency. This should help to discourage those rehabilitated persons to not begin this illicit activity again. With all of these agencies working together, New York hopes that its”revolving drug door” will close for good!
