The Procession of Illicit Drugs in New York is a Concern
Last Updated on Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:02 Written by Sam Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:02
New York has been experiencing problems with illicit drugs. Each time that New York law enforcement officials feel that they have a “stay” on a specific drug, another one enters the scene. It seems that the popularity of each drug runs in cycles. The cycle of New York’s drug use among most individuals follows the pattern listed below:
Marijuana
Many individuals in New York begin smoking marijuana at an early age, sometimes as early as 5th grade. Since marijuana is known as the “Gateway Drug”, it is not surprising that in a few years many of these young individuals will go deeper in the drug scene, only to experience”: beans’.
- Oxycontin
Oxycontin is a type of “bean” or” pill” that is extremely addictive. Some individuals have been reported to become addicted to Oxycontin after only one use. Potent and intense, Oxycontin is responsible for a lot of New York’s drug problems. Once individuals in New York go deep in the drug scene, they very often go to the ultimate “high” of heroin.
- Heroin
Heroin can be a “killer” and has an addictive state so strong and expensive that it is almost impossible for an individual to keep it sustained, without delving into criminal activity, such as stealing, to support its addiction.
New York feels that there are 3 ways in which to reduce and finally keep its drug problems from ending up into criminal ones:
- Preventive measures
The state of New York has an agenda implemented to educate all ages about the dangers and progression of drugs. This program is designed to begin as early as grade school and goes all the way to the age of grandparents, since many children are being raise by their grandparents.
- Treatment and remedies
For those individuals who are already using drugs, and are addicted, treatment facilities are licensed and trained to help addicts with a cure.
- Punishment
Drug users and pushers who are involved in criminal activity as a source to “feed their habit”, often receive punishment in hopes of teaching these individuals a lesson, and “sending a message” to all other persons who are involved in drug activity. When repercussions are incurred, many other individuals decide to get help and stop participating in drugs, due to the fact that they do not want to go to prison. In this way, punishment can serve as a type of prevention against drugs.

Heroin Plays a Big Role in New York’s Drug Scene
Last Updated on Tuesday, 16 November 2010 07:01 Written by Sam Wednesday, 17 November 2010 12:05
Heroin the potent killer of the past is now a commonly used drug in the state of New York. It can be found on the streets of New York, especially in the metropolitan areas where the population is dense. Here, heroin trafficking is intense! Its popularity is partially, due to aspects, such as role modeling in movies. This is such a negative and harmful activity; however it is made to look”cool” in movies. This can be seen in the movie, “Frank Lucas”. Where he engaged in heroin activities. This really influenced the teen generation, regarding to this illicit and dangerous drug.
Heroin can be purchased in various ways, as follows:
- Stamp
This is a small square piece of wax paper that contains heroin in powder form. This wax paper is folded twice and is stamped with different enticing images. Some of the more popular stamps include some of the following: “Purple City”, All Star”, Frank Lucas”, Green Needle”, etc. You might be surprised as to the way in which pretty stamps can encourage these already addicted individuals to purchase them. The cost is approximately $375 to $ 400 a brick, which is equivalent to 50 stamps.
- Brick
A brick is 50 stamps.
- Balloon
A balloon is the heroin that is not in paper wrappings.
- Bun
A bun is a bundle of 10 stamps
There are basically 2 ways to get high o0n heroin:
1) Sniff it
This seems to be the most common method in which to get heroin into your system, since it requires no paraphernalia.
2) Shoot it
With this method you must have a needle and mix the powder heroin with a specified amount of water. Then it can be shot into one’s body.
Depending on the severity of the addiction, is the amount of heroin that is needed per day. The longer that an individual is on this drug, the more that is needed. The reason that heroin plays a vital role in crime is because addictions usually become so expensive that the user cannot find a way to pay for his/her habit. It is felt that his/her only recourse is to steal or rob to get “fast money”. Sad, but true, a strong drug, like heroin, leads to many types of negative activities and sometimes, even death!

New York’s Problems With Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Last Updated on Monday, 8 November 2010 12:41 Written by Sam Wednesday, 10 November 2010 12:05
New York is toughening its alcohol and drug laws .There are, however, various punishments for these relevant drug related activities. The punishments pertaining to those illegal actions related to alcohol abuse are becoming stricter in New York. The reason for this tightening of penalties pertains to the many fatal catastrophes associated with alcohol abuse. For example, individuals, under the age of 21, driving under the influence will have their license suspended for 1 year, and those individuals over the age of 21 will have their licenses revoked for 1 year or longer. Although these punishments are still not as severe as they should be, they are more rigid than in the past. There are those individuals who know how to work the system.
For example, if an individual is convicted of driving under the influence, he/she can participate in a DDP program (Drinking Driver Program) and his/her license will be kept in a “conditional status” for the duration of the revocation period. Another negative implementation for individuals from the state of New York pertains to the refusal of a BAC test. This adverse action will result in the suspension of a license, for those persons 21 years or older. It will result in an individual’s license being revoked for as long as 1 year. The fine for this action is $500 for those experiencing a 1st time offense and $750 for all others experiencing repeated offenses. For those persons who are under 21 years of age and who have refused a BAC test, the punishment will result in a $125 fine combined with the suspension of his/her license for 1 year. Although refusal to engage in a BAC test has its repercussions, it is not considered to be a conviction related to alcohol abuse.
On the other hand, in New York drug punishment is implemented according to the type of drug used, along with the charge incurred. The penalties pertain to, not only the type of drug, but also the amount of the drug involved, and whether the individual had a prior drug related conviction. New York is attempting to rehabilitate its addicts, instead of subjecting them to a life behind bars. However, for those drug pushers, rehabilitation does not always seem to work, so for these persons incarceration is sometimes deemed to be the only alternative. The state of New York is serious about reducing drug trafficking, and officials feel that the only method in which to better accomplish this is by positive rehabilitation, which incorporates rehab and community service, maximized with house arrest and/ or supervised probation.
New York is on its way to waging its war against alcohol and drug abuse, and is doing this in positive and productive ways.

New York and its Illicit Drug Problem
Last Updated on Tuesday, 2 November 2010 11:57 Written by Sam Wednesday, 3 November 2010 12:02
Illicit drugs seem to be a big problem in the state of New York. The reason for this is that with a dense population comes a lot of undesirable activity which must be controlled in order for it not to affect the society in a negative manner. Drug activity results in some of the following negativism:
“Driving under the Influence” is an offense that is common throughout the United State, especially in New York. The legal consequences can range from a hefty fine, to the suspension of one’s driver’s license, to incarceration, or all three. Since the repercussions are becoming more severe, individuals seem to be curtailing their use of drugs, especially when driving.
- Violation of laws
Those individuals who participate in illicit drug activities seem to lose their sense of “right and wrong” and violate laws. The more drugs that they experience, the more they seem to be avid law breakers.
- Aggressive Behavior
When it comes to behavior, drug users seem to experience many “ups and downs” The same holds true in regard to their aggressive actions. They are more aggressive when they are “high”, as are their actions. This invariably leads to acts of violence.
- Arson Attempts
Arson is becoming more common pertaining to drug activity. This is usually a gimmick for quick money which can be obtained from the insurance company. If an individual’s property is “set on fire” the insurance money can be claimed. This is a sure way to get a large sum of money which can be used for drugs.
- Robberies/ burglaries
The need for money intensifies, as one’s drug habit increases. Many individuals feel the need to steal in order to get enough money for drugs.
- Extremely high life style
A false sense of wealth is given to those individuals who take drugs. This is usually a short – lived state of mind that results in a disastrous situation, when bills become delinquent.
- Possession of drugs
This illicit activity is both illegal and immoral. It can result in legal actions, as well as dangerous physical and mental complications.
All in all, in order to support their drug habits, some individuals make extra money by selling drugs; however a typical drug user only makes enough to take care of his/her own drug habit. Since there are many illicit activities associated with the misuse and overuse of drugs, it has become a difficult process to eliminate, but New York is well on its way!
