Dance out Drug and Alcohol Addiction in New York Schools

There are new alternatives in New York schools pertaining to the ‘War against Drugs and Alcohol”. Even in the Manhattan district of NYC, where teens are thought to be sometimes violent and uncontrollable; the fight against drugs and alcohol seems to be taking precedence, thus initiating new resolutions. This novel method of combating drugs and alcohol, through changes in attitudes, behavior, and stress is through the median of Ballroom dancing. The movie, “Take the Lead”, based on a true story demonstrates how the involvement of Ballroom dancing can change a teen’s life, even  lessening vices that have taken  control of  these individuals. It shows how some of the worst school bullies, druggies, as well as gang members can be softened and/ or rehabilitated through the act of ballroom dancing.

Dancing becomes a commitment and is so strong that it phases out all other aspects that are not positive in one’s life.  There is not time to “hang – out” with friends who have no focus. There is only time for school, and dance related activities, which is a positive aspect for these troubled teens that need direction. Having a focus on dancing gives a young individual a sense of direction, one that concentrates on music, movement, as well as the interpretation relating to music. These entire elements aide one in eliminating bad vices that have so taken over his/her life.

Ballroom dancing is especially good in connecting individuals, since it involves   partnering.  Movements that are emphasized by the synchronization of 2 individuals, in relation to music, help to teach discipline and coordination, as well as timed step patterns. These aspects assist teens in   working with others which helps them to consider other individuals’ desires, instead of just their own wants.  This is an important step in any type of rehabilitation, especially that which is related to substance abuse.
