Many states are becoming tough on drugs, due to the increasing number of individuals who are abusing these substances. Some states, such as New York, feel that the best policies relate to the prevention of drugs, as well as their trafficking.
The prevention of drugs is accomplished in various ways as follows:
• Community programs to involve individuals
There are many community programs in New York designed to keep individuals off the streets, so that they will not engage in illicit activities, such as drug and alcohol abuse. These activities range from line dancing to basketball. Teams and leagues are formed to basically direct the attention of teens and young adults to activities that will consume their time in a legal manner. This way they will not be as prone to travel “down the wrong path”.
• Rehab facilities to prevent past users from relapsing
For those individuals who have experienced and experimented with substance abuse, rehabilitation is necessary. New York has many treatment centers that are committed on assisting those individuals in their struggle of combating drugs or alcohol. These licensed centers, along with trained and certified medical professionals, can be the answer for addicted individuals. However, the individuals must also be dedicated to the cause of overcoming their addiction.
• Avoidance of punishment
There are those persons who are aware of the punishments that result from the abuse of drugs or alcohol. For example, driving while under the influence of alcohol can result in hurting not only the individual drinking, but innocent by – standers. The outcome can be fatal or very serious. Although alcohol is not illegal, its abuse is and must be curtailed. On the other hand, taking drugs is illegal and must be entirely eliminated. New York is focused on doing this!
No matter which category a substance abuser falls, New York government officials feel that they are getting closer to solving their alcohol and drug related problems., Although they still have a long way to go, they are “on top” of the situation. With prevention programs, stiffer penalties, as well as treatment programs available, New York predicts that its abuse issues well be greatly lessened in the next few years.
