The Procession of Illicit Drugs in New York is a Concern
Last Updated on Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:02 Written by Sam Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:02
New York has been experiencing problems with illicit drugs. Each time that New York law enforcement officials feel that they have a “stay” on a specific drug, another one enters the scene. It seems that the popularity of each drug runs in cycles. The cycle of New York’s drug use among most individuals follows the pattern listed below:
Marijuana
Many individuals in New York begin smoking marijuana at an early age, sometimes as early as 5th grade. Since marijuana is known as the “Gateway Drug”, it is not surprising that in a few years many of these young individuals will go deeper in the drug scene, only to experience”: beans’.
- Oxycontin
Oxycontin is a type of “bean” or” pill” that is extremely addictive. Some individuals have been reported to become addicted to Oxycontin after only one use. Potent and intense, Oxycontin is responsible for a lot of New York’s drug problems. Once individuals in New York go deep in the drug scene, they very often go to the ultimate “high” of heroin.
- Heroin
Heroin can be a “killer” and has an addictive state so strong and expensive that it is almost impossible for an individual to keep it sustained, without delving into criminal activity, such as stealing, to support its addiction.
New York feels that there are 3 ways in which to reduce and finally keep its drug problems from ending up into criminal ones:
- Preventive measures
The state of New York has an agenda implemented to educate all ages about the dangers and progression of drugs. This program is designed to begin as early as grade school and goes all the way to the age of grandparents, since many children are being raise by their grandparents.
- Treatment and remedies
For those individuals who are already using drugs, and are addicted, treatment facilities are licensed and trained to help addicts with a cure.
- Punishment
Drug users and pushers who are involved in criminal activity as a source to “feed their habit”, often receive punishment in hopes of teaching these individuals a lesson, and “sending a message” to all other persons who are involved in drug activity. When repercussions are incurred, many other individuals decide to get help and stop participating in drugs, due to the fact that they do not want to go to prison. In this way, punishment can serve as a type of prevention against drugs.

The Reasons That Drugs are a Problem in New York
Last Updated on Monday, 18 October 2010 01:33 Written by Sam Wednesday, 20 October 2010 12:05
Drugs are a problem in the state of New York. There are various reasons for this illicit activity, one being its population with the numerous metropolitan areas that are located within this state. The large masses of people make it easy for individuals to trade, solicit, and sell drugs, thus being a profitable activity. Another reason that New York has a strong illicit drug community has to do with its proximity to waterways, such as the Great Lakes, and the international boundary of the Canadian/American border. With not only the waterways, air, rail, and road travel are all very accessible to New York. One reason that prescription drugs are so prevalent within the state of New York deals with the amount of scripts that physicians write.
With so many individuals receiving Oxycontin, as well as other meds, their existence is on a very large scale. Some people sell their extra pills to either support their addiction problem, or to have a lucrative income. With all of these advantages for drug dealers and addicts, New York is the perfect location to engage in any type of illicit and/ or illegal drug activity. However, the New York law officials are sending messages to all New Yorkers that with illegal drug activity comes legal consequences. They are hoping that this will be an incentive to discourage individuals from participating in these negative drug activities. Many people are becoming aware of the tightening of laws in New York with respect to street drugs. These legal restrictions are also reducing “drug gangs” that have caused a lot of crime in the past in New York. Government agencies and law enforcement officials are doing so well on their “fight against drugs” that New York has been named as one of the ”top 10” safest cities in the United States for 2010.
New York is making progress on reducing its drug problems; however it still has quite a way to go! This state has implemented “awareness” programs, as well as treatment plans pertaining to illicit drugs. This awareness plan is presented through informative measures to all individuals, beginning from grade school ages thru adulthood, while the treatment programs are administered to already addicted individuals. With all of these agendas underway, New York is well on its way to “licking the battle” against drugs!

Why Drugs are Prevalent in New York
Last Updated on Monday, 27 September 2010 04:33 Written by Sam Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:05
Drugs seem to be popular in New York, although many provisions are being taken to reduce their existence. One reason that there is evidence of drug abuse in New York is due to the fact that there are many metropolitan areas within the state where drugs can easily be obtained. The easy ways in which these illegal drugs are purchased makes a difference as to how much of a drug problem exists. Many people wonder why the population of an area is the variant, as to the prevalence related to illicit drug activity.
The answer is simple,”accessibility” which is the result of a crowded city. When it comes to positive elements accessibility is a good thing, however when it pertains to negative factors, it can help to destroy the productive lifestyle of the individuals within an area. This has happened in New York; however with preventive education and rehab centers this drug dependency and/ or illicit activity within the borders of New York are decreasing.
Government agencies are focused on curtailing all drug activity, whether it is related to prescription or street drugs. It really does not matter which type is used, since the outcome is pretty much the same – “addiction”! The disturbing fact is that each year it seems that drug abusers and/ or users become younger. Now, New York is looking at grade school age children who are getting into the drug scene. Drug education programs have been implemented into school curriculums, beginning in grade schools to help educate and teach these youngsters the negative ways in which drugs will harm one’s body. These programs are helping to prevent drug use in young children; however there is still a long way to go. On the other end of the spectrum are those individuals who were not taught at a young age that drugs were harmful. They experimented and became “hooked on drugs”. For these people, New York has opened drug treatment centers to help cure these addicts.
With all of the above measures in full swing, New York feels that it is moving in the right direction when it comes to reducing and/ or eliminating its drug abuse.
