A Dancer’s Nightmare

Mia had always dreamed of being a professional dancer, and now her chance had finally come! It was June 15, 2010 and she had just graduated from a small high school in the hills of WV. Her senior dance recital was over, and her involvement in this show was phenomenal. Everyone, including her dance teacher, urged her to pursue her dreams and “soar to the top” of the dance profession. Although Mia was sheltered from living in such a small rural town, she convinced her parents to give their blessings pertaining to her decision involving that of moving to New York to continue studying dance, while auditioning for professional parts.

heroin A Dancer’s NightmareSo here it was, June 15, 2010, and Mia boarded the plane for her big adventure to New York City. As she waved to her family and friends, she experienced feelings of both fear and excitement. The aircraft landed at JFK airport and Mia picked up her luggage and hailed a taxi. It was so exciting, this big magnificent city. Mia checked into the Carlton and went to her room and unpacked. She had to get to bed early so that she could begin her dance classes at the “Broadway Dance Center” at 9 AM in the morning. After waking up and having a quick late breakfast, Mia went to the dance center.

This was her dream- dancers warming up, instructors preparing for classes, all of the hustle and bustle that so made this world one of excitement and glamour. The 1st week Mia was exhausted. She worked at her dance technique, only to find that she needed more training than she had thought. After finding an apartment, she felt that she would have more time and space to practice, however she was just too tired to do anything after a day of classes at the center.

Mia had a couple of friends from the center who never got tired; they seemed to go and go. One night they came to visit her after classes and they told her their secret: that she could get a lot more energy if she took heroin each day. It would be just enough to boost her energy level. Looking at them, she decided that this might not be such a bad idea, and she succumbed. That was Mia’s downfall; she quickly ran out of money so she decided to sell some of this drug in order to get enough for her addiction. Bad led to worse and Mia found she did not even care much about dance anymore. Her only concern was how to get enough money for her drug.

Mia, being a smart girl, decided that she wanted to again feel normal and sought help at one of the best New York Drug Rehab Centers that Manhattan had to offer. She entered a program and for $13, 25 per day were prescribed Methadone a drug used to wean an addict away from heroin. The process is slow, but Mia feels back to normal and is dancing again. In fact she has been contracted to perform in the Radio City 2010 Christmas Spectacular. Although it is her sheer determination with the help and skill of the rehab center that Mia is on the right track, many agree that Mia’s “passion for dance” is her main incentive for “doing the right thing” and breaking the ties with heroin!

The Most Popular Drugs among New York’s Younger Generation

Although many illicit drugs are used in the state of New York, heroin seems to be very popular for the younger generation. This highly addictive drug can almost immediately hook its user, due to the addictive bond that it forms for both physical and mental needs. A heroin addict will not be able to experience any type of good or positive feelings, pertaining to rewards without the assistance of this opium.

Heroin gives its user the feeling that it is helping when, in fact, it is a great detriment to its user. The negative effects that it has upon an individual are as follows:

  • Cramps
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Death

Younger individuals begin their journey with heroin by partying. They want to “fit in”, so they decide to try heroin, just one time. New York, being a state with many metropolitan areas, has many party scenes available to these young adults and/ or teens. However, contrary to what one may think, one time is enough to become addicted to this powerful drug. It seems fun at first, but later relates to acts of desperation, depending upon the degree of addiction. Heroin is relatively inexpensive at first, however as one’s addiction progresses, so does the amount of heroin and this of course, greatly raises the cost pertaining to a daily habit.

Persons living in the state of New York turn quite frequently to the use of heroin, due to the availability of this drug on the streets. In metropolitan areas, such as New York City, this opium can be found on almost every corner. Competition is stiff, so the best prices for heroin are available.  Individuals who have a drug problem frequent these locations and take advantage of the so – called “good deals”!

There seems to be no”opts” for these addicts except to get more of this drug. When monies run out, other sources must be implemented such as borrowing from family and friends, or finally stealing. Some individuals seek help at a drug rehab center. Here again, New York is well known for its success rates in regard to the rehabilitation of heroin addicts.

Many people feel that they could never feel normal again, until they enter rehab and begin the slow process of detoxification. The rehab program, however, seems to be somewhat like a revolving door for many persons who are not strong enough to completely “kick their addiction”. Yes, New York is known for its widespread use of heroin; however it is also regarded as a state that has many successful rehab centers to combat this poisonous drug!

Few know drug trends in the youth of New York

It is a universal phenomenon that drugs magnetize young people more than the geriatric. Main reasons are influence of the peer group, boredom, childhood abuses and domestic instabilities. When someone is filled fully with energy and have urge to do something then if it goes in the wrong direction consequences might be very horrible. Similar is the situation with the young people. New York because of its huge population is an excellent ground for the traffickers to capitalize maximum out of it. Despite the efforts of the regulating authorities, drug sale has gone sky high in this famous city of the world.  Young generation is more involved in its sale, distribution and consumption.

drug trends in the youth Few know drug trends in the youth of New YorkThis horrible journey of addiction starts with the alcohol and statistics regarding alcohol consumption in teenagers is increasing day by day. Its sale over the counter needs to be fully controlled. Average age which was 17 in the last decade has surprisingly dropped down to 15. Moreover, increase in the quantity of its consumption has added fuel to the fire. Parents should be vigilant about the society in which their kids are moving and they should also be in touch with not only with the schools but with the parents of their kid’s friends as well. A well-timed knowledge about any such incident can save their child from being an addict.

Marijuana is the second most popular addiction in youngsters. Because of its easy access, it is getting more popular among the high school children. Majority of students are willing to give it a try.

Prescription medicines are third in this trend rating. There are many pain killers and stimulants that are routinely used by many youngsters. These youngsters are well aware of the effects of these medicines and they steal it form the cupboard of their homes or illegally buy these to keep themselves alive in the classrooms.

Lastly, I may say that drug addiction has prevails its tentacles in our youth. Drug controlling authorities should work shoulder to shoulder with school administrations and parents to fighting against this nuisance. Parents should keep an eye on their kids and if there’s any reportable thing they should inform the drug controlling authorities.

A History of Drugs in New York Part I

For most people around the world, New York is ‘the’ city to visit. From the Big Apple, to Broadway, to the Statue of Liberty it is a modern wonder of the world.

Yet the city has a well documented dark side too rife with crime and danger on many corners. Drugs of course are one of the biggest problems that the police have had to deal with for more than fifty years.

History of Drugs A History of Drugs in New York Part IFrom the casual recreationalist to the hard user and of course the cause of the problem the drug dealers and traffickers bringing in the product, the police have got their work cut out.

Of course over time drugs come and go out of fashion for different reasons. One reason for these changes is police cracking down hard, making dealing near impossible.

Others are due to the efforts of the United States government changing the laws classifying a drug as A Class after results of one of their expensive research programs.

One of the biggest reasons is the change in fashion as with the nature of fashion the consumer has an unrelenting desire for bigger, better and faster.

The unbelievably profitable drug industry is no different when it comes to reinventing itself and we only have to look at the history of New York’s drug scene to see that.

In the beginning there was morphine which was given to patients before and after their operations around 1900. Then prescribed morphine continued to be used during recuperation resulting in addiction and for the most part involuntary too.

With its opium dens drying up due to the criminalization of the hard drug and it’s cousins, including heroine which was widely used at this time, New Yorkers looked elsewhere for their kicks and found them in marihuana.

Then in the thirties came the marihuana law that prohibited its use much to the dismay of the New York drug users and jazz musicians – the rappers of the past. The usage was so high at one point that the government tried using scare tactics to warn people of it.

The story goes that commissioner Anslinger famously claimed that marihuana caused, “death, criminality and insanity” which was met by a spate of insanity pleas by murderers all going unpunished.

The most outlandish case was in New York State itself after two police officers were shot dead in cold blood. The defendant pleaded insanity through marihuana use and was acquitted regardless of the fact that there was no material evidence that he had even used the drug.

What followed was a series of backtracking by the US Drug commission as it was proved that Marihuana made the user passive and not insane or murderous.

As resourceful as ever Uncle Sam found a way around the problem and in the late 1950’s classified it with all other drugs under the rationale that “marihuana is a stepping stone to heroine addiction.”

Of course this clamp down on the New Yorkers and the whole American public in general led to a rebellious element in The Sixties and by the end of the decade things were only going to get worse.
