Rockefeller Drug Laws
Last Updated on Wednesday, 20 January 2010 06:18 Written by Sam Wednesday, 20 January 2010 06:17
The Rockefeller drug laws refer to statues within the New York State Penal Law that pertain to the possession and sale of drugs in New York. These laws were enacted on May 8, 1973 under the governorship of Nelson Rockefeller, who adamantly supported them.
In accordance with these laws, the penalty for dealing two or more ounces of heroine, cocaine, morphine, opium, or marijuana, or the possession of four or more ounces of these drugs, is a minimum of 15 years to life in prison, and a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. Astoundingly, this penalty is the same of that for a second-degree murder. Early legislation also decreed the same penance for committing a violent crime after having consumed these substances. This stipulation was removed from the bill, however, and was not included as part of the legislation that Rockefeller signed. Additionally, the laws that applied to marijuana were repealed under the governorship of Hugh Carey in 1979.
Because of the severe penalties of drug possession and sales, the enactment of the Rockefeller drug laws earned New York the distinction of having the strictest laws of its kind within the United States. Subsequently, these laws were emulated by the state of Michigan, and in 1978, Michigan enacted the “650-Lifer-Law”, which necessitated imprisonment for life, without the possibility of parole, for the sale, production, or possession of a minimum of 650 grams of cocaine or any Schedule I or II opiate. Opiates are any alkaloid substances that are found in the opium poppy plant or any derivatives of such substances.
As a result of the enactment of these laws, both states received firm criticism from Democrats and Republicans, alike. Most who criticized the laws expressed the unfairness of constituting similar penalties for drug trafficking and murder. The laws have also received intense opposition for civil rights activists who claim that the laws are racist, as they are inordinately applied to Latinos and African Americans. Duly, the penalties for drug trafficking in both states have been reduced so that the laws no longer include mandatory minimum sentences. Additionally, the sentencing now allows for individuals who have been previously charged for drug trafficking to be re-sentenced and possibly released.

Is prescription medication abuse a problem in New York?
Last Updated on Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:03 Written by Sam Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:00
Like other states across the United States the state of New York has seen an increase in the amount of prescription drugs that are abused on a regular basis. In fact, it has become such a problem that many of the pills sold on the pharmaceutical drug market are actually fake pills by people looking to make a quick buck off of those who are addicted to them.
The two most commonly abused drugs in the state of New York are OxyContin and hydrocodone, which is known more familiarly as Vicodin. Many people obtain these drugs to sell illegally by visiting a large amount of doctors across the city in a practice called ‘doctor shopping’ to obtain multiple prescriptions that they can later sell. Oftentimes the practice also involves forging prescriptions.
Two other commonly abused drugs are methadone and benzodiazepines the latter of which is commonly diazepam and alprazolam. Theft and smuggling from other countries with looser medication laws and regulations such as Mexico is a common way that the prescription drugs enter the country and enter the drug trade.
Outside of these drugs prescription depression medications such as Xanax are often commonly misused in the state of New York. There is a large usage rate among high school students when it comes to these medications perhaps because they are easier to obtain than tapping into the drug trade.
In wealthier New York schools abuse of Adderall, a prescription medication used to treat ADD, is a large problem with students snorting the drug in an effort to remain more alert throughout the night. Among college students in the New York area the use of Adderall is extremely widespread with many students using the drug on the same regular basis as marijuana or alcohol.
Several other ways in which prescription drugs are spread across New York that have not previously been mentioned include shopping online for prescriptions and pill shipments through pharmacy groups, employee theft due to the high value of the pill, and pharmacy store robberies.

What are the popular drugs used in New York?
Last Updated on Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:01 Written by Sam Monday, 11 January 2010 06:54
New York has a long history of drug problems largely due to the many drug trafficking organizations that have historically operated out of New York City. It’s large diverse population also aids drug smuggling and the city often is the epicenter not only for drug organizations spread throughout the state of New York, but also to destinations across the East Coast of the United States and Europe and Canada.
Cocaine is currently one of the most popular drugs in the state of New York although at times throughout 2007 there was limited availability. Cocaine supplies within NYC are distributed to many areas within the US and the state itself. It is a larger problem in the Western area of the state and particularly in Albany. Alongside cocaine is its sub-form crack cocaine that is found in many economically depressed areas as well as in the suburbs of the state and is often linked to violent crimes in the state.
Another large drug in New York is heroin, which is found mostly in the metropolitan area of New York. It is usually smuggled into the city via the JFK Airport off of direct flights from Columbia. Similarly to cocaine heroin is increasingly becoming problematic in the areas of upstate New York. It is also causing additional problems since some of the purest forms of the drug are making its way into upstate areas of the state to users who are not familiar with its much more potent affects.
Although Methamphetamine use is smaller than cocaine and heroin its use is slowly growing across New York and becoming a large problem. Crystal meth is the most popular form of the drug within the New York drug market although there has been an increase across upstate New York of occurrences where crystal meth labs are found.
Finally, club drugs such as ecstasy are a large problem within the state of New York with most of it coming from the Netherlands and Canada. Since there are large profits to make as a trafficker the club drugs are increasingly coming into the state out of every direction.

Peer pressure leads to drug addiction
Last Updated on Tuesday, 12 January 2010 02:12 Written by Ritesh Saturday, 2 January 2009 03:02
Most addicts you see in in-house drug rehab New York centers have become victims of this life impending drug, due to the influence of friends and compeers. It’s a pitiful situation, which is partially considered as being out of control. Life risk comes from social acquaintances and in most cases your friends persuade you. Drug addiction is very influential and leads from one individual to the other. You see your friend having drugs and instead of asking him not to do so, you indulge in the same activity. This is ludicrous, as you are just giving an impression of utter social irresponsibility.
Compeers and colleagues are always in search of preys as they love to have a drug addicted association. From ten to twenty – the number increases each day. Stronger the influence more is the admission to in-house drug rehab New York centers. The group which was once outside is now within the rehab center. When a person takes drugs for the first time, he or she becomes so overwhelmed that the person starts sharing the experience with others. Due to this overwhelming influence some feel the urge to give it a try and hence the addiction is passed on. It really makes the heart ache when so many youths suffer, at the same time and when fatality is distributed like leaflets.
Drug addiction is by far, most popular among college goers. The teens love to go for adventures, thus they always have an attraction for things that are particularly unusual and entertaining. Moreover, there are youths who lack in confidence. Drug addicts are usually those who lack confidence and self esteem, as they feel that drugs help them boost their confidence and face things which they were afraid of facing before. There was a guy in one of the in-house drug rehab New York centers who was not able to propose to a girl he liked. One of his friends advised him to go for drugs to build confidence. He did so and could propose to that same girl after becoming an addict. Drug is a self booster? No dear, this is just a misconception. Drugs kill and therefore don’t suggest your friend to go for death.
